This is a blog created specifically for the use of Class 1C2, as we continue to read the sequel to the book, "Freak the Mighty." In our new novel "Max the Mighty," we find our central character, Maxwell Kane, running away from the police in an effort to save his new friend, Worm.

- The Undertaker is stuck under a huge beam, he's struggling to stay alive.
- Max feels bad for the Undertaker.
- The Undertaker admits that he did hit Worm's mom.
- The tunnel starts to collapse, but Max stays to help the Undertaker.
- The tunnel crashes down on Max.

Chapter 28: Suddenly Worm Says Good-bye
In Chapter 28:
- Max follows Worm into the dark mine.
- Max runs face first into a wall, but he is still on Worm's path.
- Max finds Worm near the mine shaft.
- Worm is thinking of jumping into the dark hole.
- Max is trying to convince Worm not to jump, but she says "good-bye."
- The mine is about to collapse.

Chapter 27: The Flower-Power Fogeys
In Chapter 27:
- Max is surprised to see Dip and Grim riding in the Prairie Schooner.
- Dip was able to contact Gram and Grim and tell them what happened.
- Dip decided that Max needs a good lawyer.
- Sheriff Goodman shows up with the Undertaker, and places Max under arrest.
- The Undertaker tries to grab Worm, but she runs into the darkness!
Chapter 26: Catch a Dragon by the Toe
In Chapter 26, we see:
- Max is scared that there are dragons in the tunnel.
- Worm and Max use the air as a guide.
- They have to be careful not to bump into the supporting beams.
- Max and Worm arrive at an old mine shaft that goes straight down.
- Worm feels the shaft is where her father died.
- Max offers to pray for Worm's father.
- Worm believes in Max the Mighty.
- Max and Worm find a way out!
Chapter 25: Things That'll Turn Your Bones into Jelly
In Chapter 25, this happens:
- "I'm not here. I'm somewhere else."
- Before Max can react, Worm runs into the mining tunnel.
- Max is scared at what he'll find in the tunnel, but he can't stop from running after Worm.
- Max runs into a timber beam.
- Worm: "I'm not going back."
- Max tries to convince Worm to return, but they continue deeper into the tunnel.
Chapter 24: Officer Friendly
In Chapter 24:
- Sheriff Goodman shows up with the Undertaker.
- The cop tries to act friendly so that Max and Worm come out.
- The sheriff warns Max and Worm that the tunnels are dangerous.

Chapter 23: The Secret of Chivalry
In Chapter 23, this happens:
- Max has too much on his mind and is unable to sleep.
- Max is mad at himself for wasting so much of his time doing nothing.
- Max again thinks of turning himself in.
- Worm is ready to go find her father.
- Worm's dad is at the railway station, but it's all boarded up.
- There is a tunnel inside the station that goes into the mountain.
- Worm's father was a miner, and he died when Worm was very young.
- Worm's miner's helmet belonged to her dad.
- Max hears a cop car siren.
Chapter 22: Magic Believes in Me
In Chapter 22, we read about:
- Max gets upset with Worm for thinking that he can't read.
- Worm enjoys her nickname, Bookworm, because she loves to read.
- Worm feels sorry for the people who make fun of her.
- Worm uses "magic" to start a fire.
- Max is "starting to wonder if maybe magic believes in me."
Chapter 21: What the Owl Knows
In Chapter 21:
- The train station is built up against the mountain and is boarded up.
- It looks like they ran "out of stuff to mine, and that's why nobody is around."
- Something is watching Max and Worm from inside one of the buildings.
- Max almost breaks his leg when he steps inside.
- There is an owl inside the old saloon.
- Worm has a secret look on her face.
Chapter 20: Chivalry
In Chapter 20, this happens:
- Worm seems nervous as they get closer to Chivalry.
- Max doesn't know what to do to help Worm.
- When they arrive, all you see are buildings.
- Chivalry appears to be a ghost town.
- Where is everybody?

Chapter 19: Wide-Open Country
In Chapter 19, this takes place:
- Thanks to Joe, Worm and Max are never too hungry.
- Hobo Joe is a generous man who doesn't ask Max too many questions, and is always cheering Worm up.
- Max is surprised to learn that Joe won't be going with them to Chivalry.
- Joe gives Max instructions on how to get to their destination.
Chapter 18: Keep Us Safe from You Know Who
In Chapter 18, this happens:
- Hobo Joe lives on the trains, and agrees to help Max and Worm.
- Max and Worm eat beans and stale bread for breakfast, but they enjoy it.
- Just like Kevin, Worm tells Max the story of King Arthur.
- Hobo Joe promises to take them to Chivalry, Montana.
- Worm: "I miss her but I hate her guts...Moms are supposed to take care of you."
Chapter 17: The Horrible Howl
In Chapter 17, we read about:
- Max is impressed that Worm is not complaining about their troubles.
- Max doesn't believe that he can help Worm; he doubts himself.
- Max and Worm are attacked by a pack of wild dogs who are threatening to kill them.

Chapter 16: Sometimes the Truth is Just Plain Stupid
In Chapter 16, we see the following happen:
*Max is running so fast he feels like an airplane.
*Max manages to latch on to a moving train.
*Worm has heard stories of Max the Mighty.
*Max finally shares his whole history with Worm.
*Max admits that when Kevin died, his whole world died.
Chapter 15: Dip Makes A Promise
In Chapter 15, we read about:
*Max, Worm and Dip are enjoying the campfire.
*”The only thing that matters is me and Worm are safe.”
*There is a $10,000 reward for the capture of Max, and Frank read it in the newspaper.
*Police cars are coming from all directions.
*”Trust yourself, Max. I’ll see you again someday. That’s a promise.”
*Max takes off running, with Worm in his arms.
Chapter 14: The Python in the Toilet Bowl
In Chapter 14, the following happens:
*Rachel knows Frank is a liar.
*Max enjoys being on the Prairie Schooner.
*Max feels that there is something wrong with Frank and Joanie.
*Frank is revealing himself to be a gold-digger.
*Frank is up to something, but Max can’t figure out what it is.
Chapter 13: There's a Sucker Born Every Minute
In Chapter 13, we read about how:
*Dip doesn’t care what people think of him.
*Worm notices that “Mr. Wonderful isn’t limping anymore.”
*Frank cons a storeowner into giving him free groceries.
*Are Frank and Joanie trustworthy characters?
*Max realizes he has just been played by Frank and Joanie.
Chapter 12: Safe Inside Her Book
In Chapter 12, the following events take place:
*Frank claims to be innocent of all charges against him.
*Dip allows for Frank and Joanie to join them on their trip.
*Rachel’s love of books, magic, sorcerers and dragons reminds Max of Kevin.
*Max misses Kevin, Grim and Gram so much that it hurts.
*”Maybe there is magic in the world, if you think about it.”
*Is Joanie a character that should be trusted?
Chapter 11: The Man With the Crutch
In Chapter 11, this happens:
*When the cops investigate Dip, he lies and states that Max and Rachel are his grandchildren.
*Max plays dumb to trick the officer into leaving them alone.
*Worm discovers somebody hiding in the woods.
*Frank and his wife Joanie claim to be victims of a robbery.
*Frank is using a wooden crutch and Joanie’s face is all beat up.
*Frank: “You see, the truth is, I’m a wanted man.”
Chapter 10: Maxwell vs. the Ants
In Chapter 10, the following takes place:
·Max regrets meeting Worm, because he's now in big trouble.
·Dip and Worm are both doing this strange-looking exercise called Tai Chi.
·Dip cooks breakfast for the three of them.
·While sleeping, Max gets attacked by fire ants.
·This causes all 3 of them to laugh, until the cops come.
Chapter 9: The Prairie Schooner
In Chapter 9, this is what happens:
Rachel tells Max that he can go home,
since she doesn't want to get him in trouble.
·Max decides to stay with Rachel, since it's the right thing to do.
·Max and Rachel get picked up by The Prairie Schooner.
·Dippie Hippie promises to take them towards Montana.
·Dip's wife died before they could travel the world.
Chapter 8: Maxwell Kane Is Too Big To Hide
In Chapter 8, the following takes place:
Max is 14, and Rachel is 11 years old.
·Rachel wants to go to Montana, where her real dad lives.
·Max wishes Kevin were still alive, so he could help them.
·Max and Rachel can't take the bus because cops are there.
·They decide to "hitch a ride."
Chapter 7: Heading For Home
In Chapter 7:
·"When you get in trouble, head for home."
·Cops are at Maxwell's home.
·The Undertaker lies about who hit Rachel's mother, and that Max kidnapped his stepdaughter.
·Grim and Gram refuse to believe the Undertaker's story.
·Max decided to run away so the Undertaker can't find Rachel.
Chapter 6: Run For Your Life
In Chapter 6, the following takes place:
·Rachel gives Max "The Wind in the Willows."
·Max thinks he needs to save Rachel.
·Rachel and her family live in the projects.
·"Shut up, woman! Shut your mouth or I'll break it!"
·The Undertaker is hitting Rachel's mom and is going after Rachel.
·Max is reminded of his own mother being beat by his father.
·"And that's how I became a desperate criminal and kidnapper, wanted by the law."
Chapter 5: The Undertaker
In Chapter 5, the following takes place:
·The Undertaker dresses in black and drives an old hearse.
·He carries a bible and collects money from people.
·He's an angry nutbar with cold dark eyes.
·The Undertaker is Rachel's stepfather.
·Why are Rachel and her mom scared of the Undertaker?
Chapter 4: You Know Who
In Chapter 4, the following happens:
·"I heard they call you Freak the Mighty."
·Max tells Worm about his friendship with Kevin.
·Worm (Rachel) has a creepy stepfather who hates books.
·"It's the Undertaker. And he's coming to get us."
Chapter 3: Back to the Dark Down Under
In Chapter 3, the following events take place:
·Max lives in the basement of his grandparents' home.
·Max is not as "stupid" as he used to be.
·Max next sees Worm on the bus but she doesn't notice him.
·Worm likes to read.
Chapter 2: A Girl Called Worm
Bookworm is described in Chapter 2 in the following ways:
· skinny red-haired
· maybe 11 or 12 years old
· bright green eyes and freckles
· wearing clothes too big for her
· getting bullied by a "gang-banger"
· gets saved by Maxwell

Introduction to Max the Mighty
Do Now:
We will create personal book covers for your book, "Max the Mighty."
You can decorate your book covers any way you please, so long as it is nothing inappropriate.
You are responsible for always having the book cover ON your book. You are also responsible for keeping it in the plastic sleeve whenever the book is not being used.
The books belong to the Queens Public Library. If you lose, damage or misplace it: YOU are responsible for paying for it.
